Our Bamboo

The following is a list of bamboos that we currently are growing, plan on growing, or just plain enjoy looking at and have thus included for you viewing pleasure. Being that our location is in Florida we are blessed to be able to grow many of the tropical clumpers that tend to be more "homeowner friendly". However, your location or desires may allow you to be able to grow an even larger variety of bamboo which may include many of the running varieties of bamboo. Either way I know you will find a bamboo or two that will suit your needs.

Bambusa chungii	Tropical Blue Bamboo	A stunning, mystical bamboo w/ thin-walled culms that are covered with persistent, dense white bloom, giving them a pale blue appearance. Slightly open clumper.	30'	2"	21F
Bambusa chungii var Barbellata	Barbie Bamboo	A smaller version of B. chungii. Highly recommmened if you don't have the room as either species is a phenominal speciemen.	25'	1.5"	21F
Bambusa emeiensis "Flavidovirens"	Unknown	A newer bamboo introduction to the US, this striking bamboo has yellow culms with dark green stripes. Tight clumping habit.	35'	2.5"	24F
Bambusa emeiensis "Viridiflavus"	Unknown	Another newer introduction, this bamboo displays almost opposite of "Flavidovirens", that has dark green culms with alternating yellow stripes. Tight clumping habit.	35'	2.5"	24F
Bambusa eutuldoides viridi vitatta	Asian Lemon Bamboo	A recent import from China, this highly ornamental bamboo has bright yellow culms with green stripes. New shoots have a pinkish/peach tones. Very cold tolerant which makes it a must have for any collection!	25'	1"	13F
Bambusa lako	Timor Black Bamboo	A simply gorgeous bamboo that has shiny black, almost purple culms with green striping. Slightly open clumper that has produces erect culms with slight arching at the top.	45'	3"	27F
Bambusa multiplex "Alphonse Karr"	Unknown	Excellent hedge bamboo with green striped yellow culms that grow tight and erect. Very cold hardy.	20'	1"	18F
Bambusa multiplex "Silverstripe"	Unknown	Another excellent hedge bamboo growing very similar to "Alphonse Karr", but with silver striped culms and variegated leaves.	35'	1.5"	18F
Bambusa mutabilis	Emerald Bamboo	A very erect, deep green bamboo that presents a classic Asian look. New culms have a whitish bloom to them. Semi open clumper which makes gives a nice screen effect.	35'	2"	20F
Bambusa oldhammi	Oldham's Bamboo	Well known classic large timber bamboo. Portrays large, erect culms with short branching. Fairly open clumper that can be seen throughout Florida in various theme parks and landscapes. Edible shoots.	55'	4"	20F
Bambusa pervariabilis viridistriata	Sunburst Bamboo	Another striking bamboo, this one produces shoots that have dark green stripes with cream culms that mature into yellow. Lower branching can be trimmed to show off the lower culms.	45'	2.5"	15F
Bambusa sinospinosa	Chinese Thorny Bamboo	Fast growing bamboo w/ intelaced branching, small leaves and armed with thorns. Forms a virtually impenetrable hedge.	70'	5"	20F
Bambusa ventricosa "Kimmei"	Kimmei Bamboo	Recently re-identified as B.tuldoides "Kimmei", this bamboo is one of the few tropical clumpers that does well in containers. Yellow culms with green vertical stripes that will produce swollen culms when water is kept to a minimum.	30'	2"	25F
Bambusa vulgaris	Common Bamboo	A common open tropical clumper throughout the world that will produce very large, open culms. However, not very cold tolerant.	65'	5"	28F
Bambusa vulgaris "Vittata"	Golden Hawaiian Bamboo	A very popular ornamental bamboo hailing from Hawaii. Very similar in growth to B. Vulgaris, however, it produces yellow culms with dark green vertical stripes. An excellent landscape specimen but not very cold tolerant.	50'	4"	27F
Bambusa ?	Unknown	This is one that we have been propagating from a neighbors grove. Large, tight clumper with short branching. Culms produced arch from the ground up.	30'	2"	25F
Bambusa ? #2	Unknown	This one I dug as a division from a grove close to where I was employed. Large, semi open clumper with branching as long as six feet. Culms have slight arching towards the top.	30'	2"	25F
Bambusa ? #3	Unknown	This one was grown from seed aquired from a grove that was flowering near Target, just off of A1A in St Augustine, FL. Fairly tight clumper with a nice arching effect. Believed to be a Multiplex variety.	30'	2"	??
Dendrocalamus minor ameonus	Angel Mist Bamboo	The most frost tolerant of the Dendrocalamus species, this beauty produces pale green culms covered in a whitish powder with irregular striping. A tight clumper that also has no lower branching. Leaves are long and wide, adding to it's eye catching appearance.	35'	3"	24F
Dendrocalamus strictus	Male Bamboo	A very versatile bamboo used in construction, the lower portions of the culms are often nearly solid. One of the bamboos that always seems to be in flower, our stock has been grown from seed. Though often not very ornamental, this one appears to have some nice landscape characterisitics.	40'	2.5"	30F
Otatea Glauca	Mayan Silver	A newer cultivar, has hollow culms unlike other Otatea's. New culms are covered ina whitish powder giving this bamboo it's silver look. Leaves are weeping and narrow. Listed not as cold hardy as Otatea acuminata aztecorum, but this one may tolerate colder temps.	18'	.5"	25F
Pleioblastus fortunei	Dwarf Whitestripe	Grows best in shade, this striking ornamental produces bold white on green variegated leaves.	4'	1/4"	10F
Phyllostachys aurea	Golden Bamboo	Bamboo that is most widely used for fishing poles. Very dense and spreads fast when established, can be used to make an excellent hedge row.	35'	2"	0F
Phyllostachys aureosulcata "Alata"	Crookstem bamboo	The all green form of Yellow Groove, this one is most known for it's zig-zag culms. Makes an excellent hedge.	30'	2"	-10F
Phyllostachys nigra	Black Bamboo	Unique and stunning running bamboo that produces green culms that turn jet black. Slow spreading at first but once established will really take off.	35'	1"	15F
Phyllostachys nigra "Henon"	Giant Gray Bamboo	Beautiful giant bamboo with distinct bluish gray culms when mature. Makes a very ghostly look and is an excellent timber bamboo.	65'	4.5"	0F
Phyllostachys heterocycla cv pubescens	Moso	The infamous Moso commonly seen in movies and widely used for construction and timber purposes. Produces edible shoots and almost always is flowering somewhere in the world. Standing in a large grove has been compared to standing in a dark forest.	75'	5"	0F
Pseudosasa Japonica	Arrow Bamboo	A popular running bamboo that tends to portray clumping habits. Excellent hedge bamboo that will also thrive well in large containers. Large leaves towards the top with the absense of lower branching as the grove matures.	18"	1.5"	0F
Sasa palmata	Unknown	A beautiful, tropical looking runner that produces marbled canes and very large leaves, up to fifteen inches long. Does well in containers.	7'	1/2"	0F
Sasa vietchii	Kuma zasa	A striking minitarue bamboo, the outer edge of the leaves turn white in the Fall while the rest of the plant stays green. An excellent groundcover bamboo.	5'	1/4"	0F
