This was my first bamboo in my collection. I dug a few divisions from a large grove located on Cecil Field Naval Air Station while I was stationed there and transplanted them to my yard. The intent was obviously to screen my yard from my neighbors behind me, as is the intent in the current house I live, just with a different bamboo. The Bambusa multiplex "Silverstripe" took off and in a few short years I had almost blocked half of the fence. Then I discovered that I could use whole culm cuttings to propagate and buried a couple culms to start filling in the rest. Shortly thereafter we moved but not before I had taken a few divisions.
As with many of the Bambusa multiplex varieties, "Silverstripe" makes an excellent privacy hedge. It is a very tight clumper, being nearly impenetrable once established. Some thinning is recommended of the older culms to allow for new, larger culms to grow up in the middle. Also very susceptible to Black Sooty Mold, but that is easily treated., bamboo growing very similar to "Alphonse Karr", but with silver striped culms and variegated leaves. Propagates easily using the whole culm burial method.
