Ah, the mighty edible "true" date palm. A stately palm native to North Africa, this stately palm is spectacular in the landscape. Very drought and frost tolerant, as well as being salt tolerant, which makes it an excellent choice for oceanside landscapes. Fruits is edible, however, in humid environments like Florida the fruit produced tends to be of very low quality, if ripening at all. This palm is one of the most widely cultivated palms in the world for it's edible fruit, which ihas been a staple dating back to 4000 BC, possibly even longer. The seed germiantes easily, and this palm also can be propagated by dividing suckers if done carefully. Currently we do not have any of these available. |
