Syagrus romanzoffiana
"Queen Palm"

Syagrus romanzoffiana (Queen Palm) is a palm native to South America, from northern Argentina north to eastern Brazil and west to eastern Bolivia. It is sometimes, incorrectly, called (and sold as) a "cocos palm". It is a medium-sized palm, growing to 15 m tall, with pinnate leaves.

The Queen Palm was once a popular garden plant in subtropical areas, mainly because of its fast growth rate. However, for this reason, it is now regarded by some as a weed. The fronds die early and must be pruned to keep the tree visually pleasing. The sheaths of the pruned fronds remain on the tree for several months and are an ideal breeding place for snails, caterpillars and other garden pests. However, with proper care this tree can and will be a beautiful addition to your landscape.
