Better known as the foxtail palm because of it's arching fronds that resemble the tail of a fox, this fast growing palm is rapidly gaining in popularity! A native to a very small area in Australia, this the Foxtail palm was virtually unknown to the palm world until 1978. They are exceptionally hardy and easy to grow, with mature trees even tolerating some light frost in winter. Very fast growing, with reports of this palm growing 2 to 3 feet per year, as well as very pest & disease resistant. These propagate readily from seed in 2 to 3 months, with some taking as long as 12 months. Some nurseries as far north as Jacksonville are starting to carry these, but this palm will need some protection of planted outside anywhere north of Orlando. We have several dozen of these growing in 3 gals but this last winter I think destroyed all of them. Only time will tell. |
